Nationality / Citizenship Criteria
According to the official SSC JE 2026 notification, a candidate must meet specific nationality or citizenship requirements to be eligible for the examination. The candidate must be either:
- A citizen of India.
- A subject of Nepal.
- A subject of Bhutan.

Medical Standards & Guidelines
The final induction into the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF/BRO) is subject to passing a comprehensive medical fitness test conducted by a Medical Board.
Key Medical Requirements:
- Visual Standards: Visual acuity must not be less than 6/12 in each eye, OR 6/6 in the Right eye and 6/24 in the Left eye. Corrective spectacles are permitted during the test, but unaided vision must not be below 6/60 in each eye. Squint, nystagmus, and colour blindness are grounds for permanent rejection.
- General Health: Candidates must be intelligent, free from nervous instability, and possess sound health. A general impaired constitution with frail health (BMI less than 18) leads to permanent rejection. Alternatively, if a candidate has a BMI above 30, they will be temporarily rejected and given 3 months to bring it below 30.
- Tattoo Policy: Permanent body tattoos are strictly prohibited, except on the inner face of the forearms (inside of the elbow to the wrist) and on the dorsal (back) side of the hand. Obscene or vulgar tattoos are unacceptable anywhere on the body.
- Physical Deformities: Gross physical deformities (e.g., pigeon chest, knock knee, flat feet, abnormal gait, kyphosis) or loss/decay of teeth interfering with proper mastication (dental points less than 14) are grounds for permanent rejection.
It is crucial to note that if a candidate fails to meet these physical or medical standards after being provisionally allocated a post in BRO, their candidature will be cancelled. The Staff Selection Commission will not reallocate them to any other department.
Salary
Selected candidates will be appointed as Group ‘B’ Non-Gazetted officers in Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Pay Matrix, with a salary range of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400/-.
Age Limit
Maximum Age: Up to 30 years or 32 years (depending on the specific department and post) as of the crucial date, August 1, 2026.
Age Relaxation: Permissible age relaxations apply for reserved categories, including 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, and up to 10 years for PwBD candidates.
