The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the notification for recruiting Stenographers in Grades C and D in various Ministries/Departments of the Central Government. According to the notification, the online Computer-Based Test (CBT) for SSC Stenographer 2025 will be conducted soon. The syllabus of the examination is key to success, as anyone appearing for an examination should be sure about the subjects that will be covered, and the syllabus explains these subjects.
SSC Stenographer Selection Procedure & Exam Pattern
- You will have to appear for a Computer Test as a part of your Selection Procedure for SSC Stenographer Recruitment.
- The CBT will be administered online in a multiple-choice format.
- The Questions will be bilingual (i.e. English and Hindi) except for the English Language Subject.

- There will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer marked.
- Once you clear the Written Test, you will be called for a Skill Test.

SSC Stenography Skill Test
Candidates who qualify for the written examination will be called for the stenography skill test.
- You will be given a dictation for 10 minutes in English / Hindi.
- The speed for Grade C stenographers will be 100 w.p.m., and the speed for Grade D Stenographers will be 80 w.p.m.
- You will have to transcribe the dictation on a computer in a given amount of time. The transcription time will be:
Grade C – 50 min (English), 65 min (Hindi)
Grade D – 40 min (English), 55 min (Hindi)

In the Stenography Examination 2025, candidates will be asked questions about Reasoning, General Awareness, English Language, and Comprehension.
Essential Topics of Stenography written examination 2025
General Intelligence & Reasoning
- It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal types.
- The test will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision-making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, etc.
- The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate’s abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationship, arithmetical computation and other analytical functions.
General Awareness
- Questions will be designed to test the ability of the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society.
- Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events, everyday observation, and experience in their scientific aspects, as may be expected of an educated person.
- The test will also include questions relating to India and its Neighboring countries, especially those related to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, the economic scene, General Politics, including the Indian Constitution, and scientific research.
- These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
For VH candidates of 40% and above visual disability /cerebral palsy affected candidates and opting for scribe there will be no component of Maps/Graphs/Diagrams/Statistical Data in the General Intelligence & Reasoning / General Awareness Paper.
English Language & Comprehension
In addition to the testing of candidates’ understanding of the English Language, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc. his/her writing ability, would also be tested.
Skill test in Stenography
Candidates who obtain the qualifying marks in the Examination as may be prescribed by the Commission will only be called for the Skill Test. Commission may also prescribe qualifying marks in each part of Examination. The skill test will be of qualifying nature and the Commission will fix the qualifying standards in the skill test for different categories of candidates.
The candidates will have to appear for the stenography test. The candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English / Hindi at the speed of 100 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘D’. The matter will have to be transcribed on compute. The transcription time is as follows:-
