Key Takeaways from the Seat Matrix

  • Most seats: Pain Medicine, Spine Surgery, and Renal Transplant Surgery lead the list with 6 seats each.
  • Strong open-category options: Pain Medicine (5), Clinical Research Methodology Part-Time (5), and Renal Transplant Surgery (4) offer the most open seats.
  • Sponsored-only fields: Advanced GI Endoscopy, Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery, Uro-Gynaecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Arthroscopy, Joint Replacement, Uro-Oncology, and Minimal Invasive Urology have no open seats this session.
  • Single-seat specialities: Several fields offer just one seat, so competition there is likely to be intense.

If you’re applying in the open category, check first whether your preferred speciality has any open seats. This step alone can save you time and help you plan a realistic strategy.

The fellowships are offered in highly specialised departments including Anaesthesiology, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Gastroenterology, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Radiodiagnosis, Surgical Disciplines, and Urology.

Eligibility Criteria

Before you apply, check that you meet every requirement. AIIMS sets clear standards for this programme.

Educational Qualifications

You must meet one of the following:

  • MD/MS (or an equivalent degree recognized by the National Medical Commission) in the relevant discipline, plus 3 years of post-PG teaching experience as a Senior Resident or equivalent at an NMC-recognized or permitted institution.
  • DM/M.Ch. (or an equivalent degree recognized by the NMC) in the relevant discipline.

Cut-Off Date

You must complete your qualifying degree and any required experience by 31 January 2027. If you’re still finishing your senior residency, work out your timeline carefully before you register.

Age Limit

There is no upper age limit for this programme. However, AIIMS New Delhi faculty members applying under the sponsored category must be below 50 years of age on the last date of online registration.

Medical Registration

Registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or the National Medical Commission (NMC) is mandatory for all candidates.

Selection Process

The selection process is structured into two stages of performance evaluation:

  1. Stage I (Written Test): A Computer Based Test (CBT) carrying 60 marks. The exam consists of 60 Multiple Choice Questions to be solved in 60 minutes. Candidates must secure at least 50% marks in Stage I to qualify for the next round.

  2. Stage II (Departmental Assessment): Candidates scoring 50% or more in Stage I will be called for a Departmental Assessment (carrying 40 marks), conducted via online video conferencing.

The final selection is based on the combined marks obtained in both Stage I and Stage II, provided the overall score is above 50%.

Application Fee Structure

Applicants are required to pay the application fee via Debit Card, Credit Card, or Net Banking.

  • General / OBC Category: Rs. 2000/- plus applicable transaction charges.

  • SC / ST / EWS Category: Rs. 1600/- plus applicable transaction charges.

  • OPH Candidates: Exempted from the application fee.

For many doctors, a postgraduate or super-specialty degree is the beginning of a career, not the end. The next step is often deeper expertise in a focused clinical area, and few places offer that training with the reputation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

Final Result and Joining

The final merit list is expected on 29 December 2026. Selected candidates must join between 1 and 15 January 2027, with an extension allowed up to 31 January 2027.

How to Prepare for a Strong Application

A little planning goes a long way with a competitive programme like this. Here are some practical steps:

  1. Confirm your eligibility early. Check your degree, teaching experience, and NMC/MCI registration against the requirements.
  2. Pick your specialty with care. Review the seat matrix and note whether your field has open or sponsored seats.
  3. Gather your documents. Keep your degree certificates, experience letters, and registration proof ready before you start the online form.
  4. Revise core concepts. The CBT will test your grasp of your discipline, so focus on fundamentals and recent clinical guidelines.
  5. Prepare for the departmental round. Be ready to discuss your clinical experience, case exposure, and reasons for choosing the specialty.
  6. Plan your joining. If selected, you’ll need to report in early January 2027, so think ahead about notice periods at your current workplace.

Why an AIIMS Fellowship Is Worth Considering

This exposure can open doors to senior consultant roles, academic positions, and leadership opportunities in your chosen field.

For doctors aiming to build a niche practice, a focused fellowship can set you apart in a crowded job market. Hospitals and medical colleges increasingly look for specialists with targeted training, and an AIIMS credential carries strong recognition across the country.
