UPSC CGS Combined Geo-Scientist 2027 Notification Out, Application Form

UPSC Geo-Scientist CGSE 2027 Application Online – The Union Public Service Commission [UPSC] has Released a Notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination, 2027, on its official Website at upsc.gov.in. Every Year, UPSC conducts a Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination (CGGE) to recruit and select candidates for the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist Group ‘A’ in GSI and Junior Hydrogeologist (Scientist ‘B’), Group ‘A’ for the Central Ground Water Board.

The Union Public Service Commission will hold a Screening Test for selection to the Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination, 2027, through the Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination, 2027, on 10 January 2027.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially released the recruitment notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (CGSE) 2027 (Notice No. 01/2027-GEOL). This national-level examination is conducted to recruit qualified postgraduates into Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ scientific positions across the Geological Survey of India (GSI) under the Ministry of Mines and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Eligibility Criteria for UPSC CGS 2027

Education Details

• Geologist (Gr. ‘A’) & Assistant Geologist (Gr. ‘B’) [GSI]: Master’s degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology, Earth Science and Resource Management, Oceanography, Petroleum Geosciences, or Geochemistry from a recognized university.
• Geophysicist (Gr. ‘A’) & Assistant Geophysicist (Gr. ‘B’) [GSI / CGWB]: M.Sc. in Physics, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Exploration Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Marine Geophysics, or M.Sc. (Tech) Applied Geophysics.
• Chemist (Gr. ‘A’) & Assistant Chemist (Gr. ‘B’) [GSI / CGWB]: M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or Industrial Chemistry.
• Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology) & Assistant Hydrogeologist [CGWB]: Master’s degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology, or Hydrogeology.

Note: Final-year postgraduate students who are appearing in their qualifying degree examination are also eligible to apply provisionally.

Age Limit (as on 01.01.2027)

• Prescribed Age Range: Candidates must be between 21 and 32 years of age as of January 1, 2027. The candidate must have been born not earlier than January 2, 1995, and not later than January 1, 2006.
• Age Relaxations:
  • SC / ST Candidates: Up to 5 years
  • OBC Candidates: Up to 3 years
  • PwBD Candidates: Up to 10 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: Up to 5 years
  • Departmental Candidates (GSI & CGWB): Up to 5 years

Selection Process

1. Stage-I: Preliminary Examination (400 Marks): Objective-type OMR-based test comprising Paper-I (General Studies – 100 Marks, 2 Hours) and Paper-II (Stream-Specific Subject – 300 Marks, 2 Hours). There is a negative marking penalty of one-third ($0.33$) mark for every incorrect answer.
2. Stage-II: Main Examination (600 Marks): Descriptive/conventional type written examination featuring three stream-specific papers of 200 marks each (3 hours per paper).
3. Stage-III: Personality Test / Interview (200 Marks): An interview conducted by the UPSC Board to assess leadership, domain knowledge, field suitability, and overall aptitude.

UPSC CGS 2027: How to Apply

1. Visit the official UPSC online registration portal at upsconline.nic.in.
2. Complete the Universal Registration Number (URN) profile and Common Application Form (CAF) module.
3. Fill in personal details, educational qualifications, and valid Photo ID card information (Aadhaar Card, Voter Card, PAN Card, Driving License, or Passport).
4. Capture a live photograph directly through your webcam/device camera following the official framing guidelines.
5. Sign three times (one below the other) in black ink on a plain white paper and upload the scanned signature image.
6. Proceed to the Examination Specific Form for Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027 and select your stream and exam centre preference.
7. Pay the non-refundable examination fee of ₹200 online (if applicable).
8. Review all fields carefully, submit the application before September 22, 2026 (18:00 Hours), and print the confirmation page for your records.

Stage-I: Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination

Note-1: There will be a penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the objective type question papers.
There are four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
If a question is left blank, i.e., the candidate does not answer it, and there will be no penalty for that question.
Note-2: The candidates are not permitted to use calculators for answering Objective Type Papers. They should therefore not bring the same inside the Examination Hall.
Note-3: Only those candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary/Stage-I Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Main/Stage-II Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Main/Stage-II Examination. The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main/Stage-II Examination will be about six to seven times the total approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through this Examination.
Note-4: The Commission will draw a list of candidates to be qualified for the Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination based on the criterion of minimum qualifying marks in the General Studies Paper (Paper-I) and Geo-Scientist stream-specific paper (Paper-II) of the Preliminary Examination.

The Details of the syllabi for Stage-I: (Preliminary Examination) and Stage-II: (Main Examination) of Combined Geo-Scientist Examination are as under:

Paper-I in General Studies of Stage-I is common for all streams and its standard will be such as may be expected of a science graduate. Paper-II of Stage-I (Stream specific) and 3 compulsory papers of Stage-II each on Geology, Geophysics, Chemistry and Hydrogeology subjects will be approximately of the M.Sc. degree standard of an Indian University and questions will generally be set to test the candidate’s grasp of the fundamentals in each subject.
