Selection Criteria

The selection happens in four stages. You must clear each one to move to the next. Here is what each stage asks of you.

1. Written Exam. This is where your preparation is tested. The exam has four papers worth 600 marks in total. You need to qualify here before anything else counts.

2. Walking Test. This checks your physical fitness. Male candidates walk 25 km within 4 hours. Female candidates walk 16 km within the same 4 hours. Start building your stamina early, because you cannot cram fitness the week before.

3. Medical Examination. A Medical Board checks whether you are fit for field duty. If you pass, you submit a health certificate signed by a physician. This stage is straightforward as long as your health records are in order.

4. Interview. The final stage carries 75 marks. Questions cover the job profile and your syllabus. Speak clearly and know your basics.

Clear one stage at a time. Focus on the written exam first, since everything else depends on it.

The English paper is written by hand, so practice essays and precis on paper, not just in your head. The other three papers use OMR sheets, which reward speed and accuracy. One rule matters here: you cannot pick two optional subjects from the same group. For example, you cannot choose both Mathematics and Statistics, or both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Check the group list before you lock in your choices.

  • Written Examination: 600 Marks (4 Papers)
  • English (Essay, Precis writing, etc.): 100 Marks
  • General Knowledge: 100 Marks
  • Optional Subject 1: 200 Marks
  • Optional Subject 2: 200 Marks

You cannot select two subjects from the same group. The restricted groups are: Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering & Veterinary Science; Chemistry & Chemical Engineering; Computer Applications/Computer Science & Computer Engineering; Electrical Engineering & Electronics Engineering; and Mathematics & Statistics. Pick subjects you already studied in your degree. You will move faster with material you know than with a topic you start from scratch.
